Explorers and settlers found the lush beauty and woodlands beside the Potomac RIver inhabited by Native Americans and wildlife, such as bear and bison. Variously known as Pack Horse Ford, Swearingen's Ferry and Mecklenburg; Shepherdstown, West Virginia is now a premier destination with a variety of restaurants, boutiques, entertainment and activities for all ages. It is also the home of Shepherd University and hosts the yearly Contemporary American Theater Festival.
